IIHR Blended Learning Model for Applied Research

The IIHR Academy uses a Blended Learning Model (BLM) for teaching Applied Research methodology. The IIHR BLM for Applied Research consists of a three-step learning method: (A) online learning via IIHR Learning Management System (LMS), (B) in-person applied workshops and (C) in-person internship.

A) Online learning

Online learning via the IIHR LMS provides theoretical foundations for the course. At this stage, learners are paired with IIHR faculties who help students tailor their learning journey to their individual needs. This stage takes 2-8 weeks to be completed; it depends on students’ individual pace. Extension are available if request is placed in a timely manner (usually one week from the start of your courses). Successful completion of online learning (stage A) is a prerequisite for admission to move to next stages (stages B and C).

B) In-person workshops

In-person workshops include 3-4 workshops that are held in West Vancouver (IIHR Classes) and Vancouver at the University of British Columbia (UBC)- Robson Square (TBA). These workshops train students skills they need for conducting Applied Research. In total, the workshops provide 24 hours of skill-based learning experience with hands-on practices. Successful completion of all workshops is a prerequisite to qualify the IIHR Research Internship.

C) Research Internship

The IIHR Research Internship is the final stage of the IIHR Applied Research course. During this stage, learners are paired with a researcher at IIHR and develop and implement a simple research project under direct supervision of their supervisor or they participate in an existing research project at IIHR lab. This period is an intensive research experience that requires active involvement of the students. The Internship empowers students about all stages of research from conception of the ideas to knowledge production and Knowledge Translation. At the end of Internship, students participate in graduation ceremony. Students who have outstanding outcomes may qualify for CAD 500 for Knowledge Translation (KT) Award to present results of their research in conferences.
