About the workshop:
In Level 1, you will develop literacy of basic research methodology in health service. You will be empowered about development, implementation and evaluation of health service researches in a basic level. People, who have studied in one of health-related fields and are planning to apply for graduate/post graduate studies in Canada or elsewhere, or those who are planning to work as a “Research Assistant”, will find this workshop very helpful. “Research Assistant (RA)” in Health Service Research which is a demanding job in Canadian universities like UBC and affiliated hospitals requires special eligibility and skills.
Learning objectives:
After completion of this workshop, you will improve your literacy about:
Essential concepts of health service research
- Epidemiological thinking: Basic measures in epidemiology, study designs, measures of association, diagnostic tests and bias in health service research
- Biostatistics: Essential statistical concepts in health service research, summarizing data (mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation and standard error), basic concepts of statistical inference (using samples to understand populations, confidence intervals, P-value, hypothesis testing, statistical power), basic methods in biostatistics (parametric and non-parametric tests)
- Critical appraisal of health service studies
- Using statistical software (SPSS, SAS, R)
- Developing research proposals and beginning your own research
- Using reference managers: Mendeley
Participants: Healthcare professionals with the minimum of two years university studies.
Number of participants: 10-15 people
Duration: 3 Days
Location: IIHR- Vancouver or in your place

Evaluation: Developing and conducting a simple research project
Certificate: Certificate of completion will be issued by the International Institute for Health Research (IIHR).
