About the course
This course will focus on two main topics of qualitative research and discourse analysis. After setting foundations for qualitative research methodology, the course will focus on “language in use”. This is an applied course.
The course includes three main parts: (a) Theoretical considerations in qualitative research and discourse analysis: This part is mainly online learning experience that will include 14 sessions of 4-hour lessons (56 hours in total). At the end of each session, you will be asked to answer questions about that lesson. Use IIHR LMS and follow the course outline to do your course. Learning material will be provided via IIHR LMS. Every 10 students will be assigned a faculty that will be in contact with you for any problem solving. (b) Practical steps in qualitative research and discourse analysis: This part will include a 3-day in person workshop (24 hours in total) at IIHR during which you will be reviewing practical aspects of qualitative research and discourse analysis. (c) Research Internship: This part of the course will happen at IIHR and will include 20 days of in person work on real research (100 hours in total) under direct supervision of IIHR faculty. The course in total includes 180 hours of learning experience that is considered to be 9 credits.
Participants
Target groups for this course will include: (1) Healthcare professionals (leaders and non-leaders such as physicians, nurses and allied health professionals), (2) Business administration professionals (all management and leadership levels), and (3) Marketing and advertisement professionals. This course is planned for 15-20 participants.
Learning objectives
After completion of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Develop and evaluate qualitative research proposals/ protocols with specific focus on discourse analysis
- Collect qualitative data using naturalistic observation, unstructured, semi-structured and structured interviews and focus groups
- Analyze your data using thematic and linguistic discourse analysis techniques, develop your model of making sense of your data and plan for change. The course will have special focus on Quality Improvement, Quality Control and Quality Assurance using Participatory Action Research (PAR), Ethnography and Grounded Theory approach.
- Use ATLAS ti qualitative data analysis software to manage, analyze and report your data, as well as in writing variety of memos in your research; you will need to buy and download Windows version of ATLAS ti software package for on your computer.
- Use Mendeley Reference Manager for citation management in your write up. You will need to download this software on your computer for your course.
Time
This course happens all over year and registration is always open. Each cohort of students will need 2-3 months to finish their course. Online education is expected to be done in 3-8 weeks depending on your own pace. The in person workshop and internship will need one month.
Evaluation
Evaluation for online part of the course will include online multiple online quizzes. Evaluation of the in person workshop will be based on analyzing data. Internship evaluation will be based on testing your capability for conducting and managing real research and producing presentation and producing publication(s).
Certificate
Certificate of completion will be issued by the International Institute for Health Research (IIHR).
How to start
To start the course, after registration, you will need to take the online course. After completion of this course, you will receive your IIHR Report Card as well as Certificate of Achievement with a unique code that is verifiable by any organization in the link that will be included in the Certificate for your online course. Next, you will receive a formal letter of invitation with the same unique code for in person sessions that will include: (a) In-person 24-hour workshop and (b) In-person internship both in Vancouver at IIHR.
